Table of Contents
Modern Glass-Wall Buildings
Modern architecture is often synonymous with glass-covered buildings. Here are a few standout locations, along with a bonus option for rooftop cityscapes.

Rochester Public Library & Civic Center | Rochester Art Center
Location: 101 2nd St SE & 40 Civic Center Dr SE
These two white, modern buildings face each other and offer a great view along 2nd Street SE.
The Mayo Civic Center stairs provide an excellent location to sit and pose, while the curved glass wall creates an interesting and futuristic backdrop.

Rochester Art Center & the Tapered Arch-Shaped Sculpture
Location: 221 3rd Ave SE
The artistic architecture of the Rochester Art Center, paired with its sculptural installation, offers a sophisticated setting reminiscent of Chicago’s famous “Cloud Gate” (The Bean).
The walkway along the Zumbro River adds a dynamic, urban feel to the images while providing a balance between modern design and nature.

Mayo Clinic – Siebens Building
Location: 100 2nd Ave SW
The top portion of the Siebens Building is covered in reflective glass, but the lower section is lined with polished marble, creating an elegant backdrop. The slightly angled surfaces reflect light beautifully, adding depth and brightness to engagement photos.
The art-nouveau-style lamps in front of the building also add a distinctive touch.

Mayo Clinic – Gonda Building (Front & Back)
Location: 200 1st St SW
The blue-tinted glass façade of the Gonda Building provides a modern city backdrop. Instead of staying too close to the structure, we will step back to allow the building’s glass windows to blur, creating a softer background.
The arched dome at the entrance adds an architectural detail that can be incorporated into the session.

The Annenberg Plaza And Mayo Building
Location: 15 1st St SW, Rochester, MN 55902
A mix of modern and historic structures surrounds Annenberg Plaza.
Annenberg Plaza is a pedestrian square tucked between the Mayo building (and its marble walls) and the Plummer Building (and its limestone). Originally created in 2005 through a $1 million gift from philanthropists Walter and Leonore Annenberg. Today, the plaza is currently part of a large Mayo Clinic redevelopment project, with entrances under construction until 2026.
Why it’s photogenic: For engagement photos, this area offers both openness (with sun from the south) and artistry: the clean lines of the plaza highlight couples with a touch of nature in the middle of buildings.

Peace Plaza
Location: 1st Ave SW & 2nd St SW
The Peace Plaza stretches from the Gonda Building to University Square.
This square brings many styles together. The University Square building shows warm red brick, while the Chateau Theatre glows with a sunburst marquee and Edison bulbs. Cafés and shops line the edges. Across the way, the glassy Gonda tower, the Marriott, a white and glass corner, and the Wells Fargo building frame the view with modernity. The plaza was redesigned from 2019 to 2022 and reopened in May 2022.

Peace Fountaine
Location: 1st Ave SW & 2nd St SW
The Peace Plaza stretches from the Gonda Building to University Square.
At the East of Peace Plaza stands the Peace Fountain with an iconic scuplture by Charles E. Gagnon, installed in 1989. It rises about twelve feet and interlocks fifty-seven bronze doves. The sculpture sits on a dark pedestal that was added during its 2021 restoration.
The Peace Fountain is a shallow water feature that has a thin sheet of water you can walk through. It evokes Bordeaux’s Miroir d’eau, the reflecting pool at Place de la Bourse.
The peace fountain added another dimension with poetry written beneath the stone. But due to numerous controversies, the city of Rochester has slightly rethought the installation. Today, some part of the fountain is covered by a bench, making the installation more usable but preventing the reading of the text.

The Big Red “ROCHESTER” Sign
A large, bright-red, freestanding “Downtown Rochester” sign that sits in or near Peace Plaza in the heart of downtown. It’s intentionally placed as a selfie/meet-up landmark (for social media) and often shows up in event photos.
This bold red sign, reminiscent of Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture, adds a pop-art vibe; that’s just the right balance of fun without feeling too touristy.

Fun : “My Brother and I” Statue
Tuck Langland’s bronze of Drs. Will and Charlie Mayo invites you to sit right beside them, as if you are joining their conversation. Installed in 2002, the brothers rest on a three-tiered set of steps near Gonda’s entrance, and they’ve become a rite-of-passage photo stop for students, staff, and visitors. The relaxed pose, surgical gowns, and classical drape give the scene a mix of warmth and dignity. As Mayo’s downtown entrances are remodeled, the Clinic has noted plans to relocate the statue within the refreshed pedestrian space between the east Gonda and east Mayo entrances, keeping it at a front door to campus life.
What makes “My Brother and I” photogenic:
The playful “My Brother and I” statue offers a fun pose, especially for Mayo Clinic couples, perhaps hinting at a future wedding at Mayowood Stone Barn.
You can play with the life-size figures, which adds a light, second-degree humor to the portraits. Almost everyone in Rochester has a photo with the Mayo brothers, so your image feels local, familiar, and instantly relatable.

The Renovated Paved Section on 1st Ave SW
Location: 1st Ave SW
The modern design of the wooden orange benches contrasts beautifully with the green oak trees lining the street.
The clean, minimalist, and structured design of this area creates a contemporary and sophisticated atmosphere, perfect for couples who love a sleek, urban setting.

One Discovery Square
Location: 202 4th St SW
One Discovery Square is one of the newest additions to downtown Rochester’s landscape. Its sleek architecture and modern interior design make it a great addition to engagement sessions.
If you have access to the inside (as a Mayo Clinic employee or University of Minnesota student), the interior space offers a very modern design.

Mayo Clinic – Kellen Building
Location: 110 2nd Ave SW
The Kellen Building is the latest addition to the Mayo Clinic campus and has sparked some debate due to its bold, futuristic design.
From a photography perspective, it is an incredibly striking and geometric structure. The best way to capture it is from a distance, allowing the unique shapes and angles to frame the couple in an artistic way.
Chic and Vintage Historic Buildings
Thanks to the Mayo Clinic’s long history, downtown Rochester has several sophisticated historic buildings that add a timeless touch to engagement photos. These locations balance the modern architecture of the city and bring elegance and character to your session.

The Plummer Building and Annenberg Plaza
Location: 100 2nd St SW
One of the most iconic and elegant buildings in Rochester, the Plummer Building is known for its ornate bronze doors, intricate stonework, and towering carillon bells. If there is one Instagram-worthy location, it’s these massive, historic doors.
The Annenberg Plaza, in front of the building, provides additional space for grand and dramatic shots, making this one of the best backdrops in town for a classic engagement session.

Mitchell Student Center
Location: 1000 14th St NW (Saint Mary’s Campus)
This historic building offers a classic collegiate aesthetic, with grand staircases and vintage charm. The wooden Gothic-style arch doors make for a picturesque engagement photo stop, adding a sense of tradition and sophistication.

The City Hall Apartments
Location: 224 1st Ave SW
Originally the old city hall, this building features classic brickwork, tall windows, and decorative exterior lamps in an Art Nouveau style. It’s symmetry and architectural elegance make it a great option for a refined and polished engagement session.

The Former Olmsted County Bank
Location: 7 2nd St SW
A hidden gem in downtown Rochester, this historic bank building features a grand stone façade with two prominent columns at the entrance. The sophisticated and stately exterior provides a polished backdrop for engagement photos, adding a touch of luxury to your session.

The Heritage House & Fountain
Location: Central Park, 225 1st Ave NW
Located on the north side of downtown, this Victorian-style home offers a romantic, old-fashioned ambiance. The surrounding park features a large fountain, which can be used for a few classic, intimate engagement photos. While the house itself is not large, its charming details make it a unique addition to an engagement session itinerary.
Pictorial Midwest Vibes & Character Locations
Downtown Rochester, especially along Broadway, is home to many historic brick buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places. These red-brick structures, often converted into restaurants, cafés, or affordable wedding venues, provide a perfect backdrop for engagement photos with a classic Midwest character.

Café Steam
Location: 315 Broadway Ave S
For couples who love a casual, artsy, and coffee-shop aesthetic, Café Steam offers a cozy background. The industrial-style brick walls and warm interior lighting create a laid-back, intimate feel.

3rd Street SW
Location: 3rd St SW
This street is packed with restaurants and lively storefronts, making it a vibrant urban setting for engagement photos.
Key locations along this stretch include ThaiPop, Lucky, and The Tap House, all housed in classic red-brick buildings with string lights overhead, adding charm and warmth to the atmosphere.
This area works especially well in winter when the lights give a festive feel, but it can also be busy in summer, so planning for quieter times may be ideal.

The Old Brick Alleys
Location: Around 3rd St SW
Tucked between storefronts and loading doors, these alleys feel like little time capsules. Brick underfoot, brick on the walls, and a narrow slice of sky above. In summer, you’ll catch ivy from the Café Steam; in winter, the textures stand out even more. I like to start with you walking hand in hand, then pause you where the alley bends so the lines pull the eye right to you. We can add motion with a playful twirl or keep it calm with a quiet forehead-to-forehead moment. If a delivery truck or a passerby wanders through, no problem, we use it as a storytelling layer and keep rolling.
What makes the Old Brick Alleys photogenic:
Warm, weathered texture that flatters skin and adds character. The symmetrical leading lines from the walls guide the composition to the center: you. Those little brick alleys are convenient in the middle of the day, creating shade.
And for the engagement session, they contrast with the glassy, modern corners nearby, so your gallery feels rich and varied.

Historic Chateau Theatre
Location: 15 1st St SW
With its grand marquee, vintage charm, and Edison bulb-lit signage, the Chateau Theatre provides a backdrop reminiscent of classic cinema and old Hollywood glamour.
A few shots in front of this landmark can add a theatrical and artistic element to engagement photos.

The Castle
Location: 121 N Broadway Ave
Originally Rochester’s armory, The Castle is now a restaurant and event space that maintains its historic fortress-like design.
The twin brick towers and Gothic-inspired stone walls give this location a dramatic, regal feel, making it an excellent choice for couples who love a bold and timeless aesthetic.

The Train Tracks
Though often overlooked, Rochester’s train tracks offer a unique setting for engagement photos.
In American photography, train tracks are frequently used to symbolize journey and companionship (a fitting metaphor for a couple’s future together).
While it wouldn’t be the main location for an engagement session, capturing a few meaningful shots along the tracks can add depth and storytelling to the gallery.

Bonus: The Antique Store
For couples who love vintage aesthetics, stopping by a local antique store can create a warm, nostalgic setting.
The mix of retro signage, old furniture, and unexpected collectibles provides a textured, one-of-a-kind backdrop for playful engagement photos.
I especially love the font store, with it’s old sign and wood tile roof.
Parks and Natural Settings
While downtown Rochester is known for its urban charm and historic architecture, it also offers a few natural settings that can add variety to your photo shoot. These locations provide river views, greenery, and seasonal color changes, creating a more organic feel for your photos.

Mayo Park & Zumbro River Shore
Location: 30 Civic Center Dr SE
Mayo Park features a mix of river views, bridges, and towering elm and maple trees, offering a peaceful natural setting. However, the park falls into the shade of the Mayo Civic Center during sunset, so it may not be the best choice for golden-hour photos.
Its convenient location near downtown makes it an easy stop for a few nature-inspired shots, but if you’re looking for the best parks in the area, you may want to consider Quarry Hill, Chester Woods Park, or Oxbow Park, which offer more dramatic landscapes and diverse backdrops.

Rochester’s Central Park
Location: Central Park, 225 1st Ave NW
Located on the north side of downtown, between the railway and the Mayo Clinic area, this small park hosts the Heritage House (mentioned earlier) and its fountain. The park also features a gazebo, benches, a nice old-style gas lamp, an old clock, and some majestic oaks.
The best lighting is late in the afternoon.

Silver Lake Park
Location: 840 7th St NE
A large, open park with water views, greenery, and winding walking paths, Silver Lake Park is a great choice for couples who want a classic outdoor setting.
For a more playful touch, couples can even feed the geese (just bring some food, as they love interacting with visitors). The more adventurous can rent a paddleboard, adding a fun and dynamic element to the session.
During the fall, some trees in the park turn vibrant shades of orange and red, making it a stunning spot for seasonal engagement photos.

Bonus: Cascade Creek and Thompson Mill Race Park
Location: Cascade Lake Park, 88 23rd Ave SW
Cascade Creek is a hidden gem near downtown, featuring walking paths, footbridges, and tree-lined trails, offering a perfect mix of city and nature.
The creek flows into the Zumbro River at Thompson Mill Race Park, an underrated spot that includes a small sandy beach area. Few people know about this location, making it a quiet and intimate setting for engagement photos.
For a better idea of how this area looks in photos, you can check out a wedding I shot at the Floral Hall.
Parking Rooftop with views to take photos in Rochester, MN

Parking rooftops are one of my favorite places to shoot. They feel open and free. On the top levels, you often catch a light breeze that moves hair and long dresses, which adds energy. The vibe reads a little rock-and-roll, a little romantic, and not cliché. Rooftops are also the best place to enjoy a sunset since you rise above the shadows cast by nearby buildings. I usually recommend we finish the session up here. From a lighting point of view, they are very flattering. The pale concrete reflects sunlight and wraps your skin in soft, even light.
Here are the four best rooftops in Rochester for photos.
- The 3rd Street Parking Ramp and its view on the Plummer Building Carillon
- Center Street Parking Ramp and it’s view on the Kahler Grand Hotel Neon Sign
- Mayo Clinic Employee Ramp 23 and it’s view on the city scape
- West Parking Ramp (Ramp 9)
If you consider including a spot at a parking rooftop, check our guide to get the best of your photos.
Covered Location in Rochester for engagement and wedding day pictures
I usually don’t recommend shooting inside a building, but on a wedding day, or if your schedule is tricky and you have no other option, then a covered location is important.
Let’s see which option you have in Rochester.
What we are looking for is a building with a lot of natural light. Some have already been mentioned, so I will just give you a quick list.
- The Mayo Civic Center – We would use the first floor
- The Rochester Art Center – but it’s a wedding venue, so you will need a permit
- The Marriott Hotel – The Lobby on the top of the escalator
- The J.Powers Hilton – The lobby at the entrance and the second-floor Lobby
- The One Discovery Square – We would use the coffee shop
- The University of Minnesota – Former DoubleTree Hotel lobby is pretty bright (but access is reserved for students)
- The Gonda stairs – This is where most Mayo employees get their headshots taken. Pictures are forbidden, and we might be kicked out by the guard, though, so you will need a permit from the clinic or fast.
- Rochester Skyways – Most of the Skyways are not appealing but in the worst case scenario, we could use some for a few images.
Note that, for a hotel, you would need to get a room there or at least the manager’s authorization.
Final Thoughts
Downtown Rochester offers a diverse range of engagement photo locations, from modern cityscapes to historic landmarks and scenic natural spots. Whether you’re drawn to glass buildings, vintage brick architecture, or tranquil park settings, there’s a perfect backdrop to match your style.
Most of these locations also work well for wedding day portraits, especially for couples getting married downtown. However, it’s important to check for festivals or city events that could impact access to certain areas.
If you want more options for downtown, then you might consider driving to other cities, such as Faribault, Red Wing, Zumbrota, or Stillwater.
If you haven’t booked all your vendors yet and are still looking for a wedding photographer, I’d love to capture your engagement and wedding day. Contact me today to start planning your perfect session!
