Why Add a Rooftop To Your Session

It evokes an open space with romantic bohemian energy and dynamic movement.
Rooftops give you unlimited space to move, dance, and be completely yourselves. The wind becomes your styling assistant, creating that effortless movement you see in fashion campaigns and perfume ads.
Think of those iconic NYC rooftop scenes where couples have the best view in the city. There’s something beautifully bohemian about being above it all. The concrete and sky create a raw, romantic backdrop that feels both urban and free.
Your photos will capture genuine emotion and natural movement. No cramped corners or awkward positioning here.

It adds variety after a downtown historic locations
Rooftops offer instant contrast to your other Rochester locations. Maybe you started at Peace Plaza or the historic Chateau Theatre. A rooftop gives you completely different energy in just five minutes.
The architectural lines and open sky create striking compositions. You’ll have intimate close-ups and dramatic wide shots all in one location.
This variety keeps your gallery fresh and dynamic. Your story unfolds across different moods and settings.

It great for shy people
That’s a place you won’t meet your colleagues. It’s perfect for a shy couple or just for a couple looking for privacy.

A Place that works for wedding Party Photos
If you want dramatic photos of your wedding party, you can use the rooftop.
The good news is that they are empty on the weekend!

A Place suitable for Senior Pictures as well.
Good lighting, a modern and photogenic background, and a quiet place are three qualities that work great for my Rochester senior photos session as well.
When To Go

Golden hour for soft glow and warm skin tones
Golden hour transforms rooftops into pure magic. That warm, soft light hits concrete and creates the most flattering glow on your skin.
Plan your session for one hour before sunset. The light wraps around you beautifully, and the city lights start twinkling behind you. This timing gives you both warm portraits and dramatic silhouettes.
Rochester’s western exposure means stunning sunset views from most parking ramps. You’ll get that dreamy, romantic lighting that makes every couple look like movie stars.

Cloudy day advantages on pale concrete
Don’t cancel for clouds. Overcast skies create perfect, even lighting on rooftops. The pale concrete actually reflects light beautifully on cloudy days.
Cloudy conditions eliminate harsh shadows and bright hot spots. Your photos will have rich, consistent tones throughout. The dramatic sky adds texture and mood to your images.
Some of my favorite rooftop sessions happened on overcast days. The moody atmosphere creates incredibly romantic and editorial-style photos.
What To Wear On A Rooftop

Colors that pop against concrete, sky, and the buildings
Bold colors create stunning contrast against Rochester’s urban backdrop. Think jewel tones, rich burgundies, or classic navy blues that make you stand out beautifully.
Avoid pale grays or beiges that blend into the concrete. Instead, choose colors that complement the sky – whether it’s blue, golden, or dramatic and stormy.
Deep greens, warm oranges, and rich purples photograph beautifully against both concrete and glass buildings. Your outfits should make you the stars of every frame.

Choose fabrics that move beautifully in the wind
Flowing dresses are absolute magic on rooftops. Here are the best options that dance beautifully in Rochester’s rooftop breezes:
- Maxi dresses in chiffon or georgette create stunning, ethereal movement. The long flowing fabric catches every breeze for romantic, editorial-style shots.
- A-line midi dresses in silk or crepe offer elegant movement without overwhelming the frame. These fabrics flow naturally while keeping you comfortable and stylish.
- Wrap dresses in lightweight jersey or modal move beautifully and flatter every body type.
- Tulle or organza skirts add fairy-tale romance to your session. Pair with a fitted top for perfect balance and stunning wind-caught moments.
- Bohemian-style dresses with bell sleeves in cotton gauze or linen blends create that effortless, free-spirited movement.
- High-low hemlines in soft fabrics give you movement variety in every shot.
Avoid heavy satins, thick knits, or structured fabrics that won’t move. Think lightweight, flowing, and soft for the most beautiful rooftop photos.

Loose hair that moves in the wind, not tons of gel
Skip the heavy styling products for your rooftop session. Loose, natural hair that flows and moves creates the most beautiful, candid moments.
Light waves or your natural texture work perfectly with rooftop breezes. The movement adds life and authenticity to your photos.
Think effortless and romantic rather than perfectly polished. The wind will create stunning, natural styling that no salon can replicate.
Safety, Access, and Etiquette
Follow posted rules and stay away from edges
Stay back from all edges and follow posted signs. The best photo spots are in safe, central areas of each level.
I’ll guide you to secure locations where we can create beautiful photos safely.
Be ready to move if a level gets busy
Parking ramps serve the public first. We’ll quickly move to another spot if cars need to park where we’re shooting.
Where to park and how we keep it quick, or use a lower level when public
Park on street level when possible. We’ll use lower, less busy levels during peak times.
Plan for 30 minutes to one hour if shooting sunset
Most rooftop sessions run 30 to 60 minutes. Sunset timing requires the full hour for maximum lighting variety.
Quick portrait sessions work perfectly in 30 minutes. Golden hour sessions need extra time for both warm light and silhouettes.
How To Get The Best Of Your Session On A Rooftop

Have fun and lean into the breeze
Embrace the wind instead of fighting it. Let your hair flow and enjoy the natural movement the breeze creates.
Laugh, dance, and be yourselves up there. The most beautiful photos happen when you’re genuinely having fun.

Play with smoke bombs for color and drama, with safe use and property rules in mind
Colored smoke bombs add incredible drama against concrete and sky. Check property rules first and plan wind direction carefully.
Less is more with smoke effects. A few well-timed puffs create more impact than constant heavy smoke.

Bring your own car to include in the photos if you have a nice one
Your car becomes part of the story on parking ramp rooftops. Classic cars or modern beauties photograph wonderfully against urban backdrops.
Not every session needs a car, but if yours has meaning to your relationship, bring it along.

Let’s do silhouettes against the skyline and sunset
Silhouettes create pure romance against Rochester’s skyline. Golden hour timing gives us dramatic, cinematic images.
We will mix silhouettes with lit portraits for variety. This gives you both intimate details and sweeping romance.
Best Parking Rooftop with views to take photos in Rochester, MN
Parking rooftops are one of my favorite places to shoot. They feel open and free. On the top levels, you often catch a light breeze that moves hair and long dresses, which adds energy. The vibe reads a little rock-and-roll, a little romantic, and not cliché. Rooftops are also the best place to enjoy a sunset since you rise above the shadows cast by nearby buildings. I usually recommend we finish the session up here. From a lighting point of view, they are very flattering. The pale concrete reflects sunlight and wraps your skin in soft, even light.
