Presentation of the Mayo Civic Center indoor options

A Conveniently Located Building

The Mayo Civic Center is located on the east side of downtown at 30 Civic Center Dr SE. Its south and east sides border the Zumbro River and a scenic river walkway. The building connects directly to the Rochester Art Center and is next to Mayo Park.

One of the Free Covered Photo Options in Rochester

If you live in Rochester, MN, you likely know that we do not have many indoor photo locations. The Mayo Civic Center is one of the few, along with:

  • The University of Minnesota Dormitory (formerly the DoubleTree hotel)
  • The One Discovery Square building and its very cool coffee shop
  • The first floor of the Marriott
  • The J. Powers Lobby

The main asset of this large, square event center is its double-height hallways with floor-to-ceiling glass walls. These walls face south and east, flooding the space with natural light, which is essential for photography.

Limitations: Walls & Light

On the downside, the wood-toned walls lean toward orange. While this warmth can feel inviting, the color is very close to human skin tones. This can be problematic for photography, especially with Caucasian and Asian subjects.

Another drawback is the flooring. The first level has shiny white tiles. These are great for photos because they reflect light. However, the second floor is covered in a patterned “hotel carpet.” This carpet is not only unattractive but also hides stains very well, which can be frustrating for your photographer.

Lastly, the hanging artificial lights have a low color temperature (around 4500°K), casting a warm orange glow. In contrast, outdoor light is much cooler (about 6000°K on sunny days and 7000°K when cloudy). When the orange ceiling glow mixes with the cooler outdoor light, it can create unusual or even unflattering color casts. This is the kind of lighting you might expect at a retro dance party, not necessarily ideal for engagement photos. While desaturating the colors is an option, that is not my preferred aesthetic.

An Almost Empty Location When No Events Are Scheduled

If you plan a session, check the Civic Center’s event calendar. If no events are scheduled, it is usually quiet, which is great for intimacy. After all, relaxing in front of a crowd is difficult, if not impossible.

A Wheelchair-Friendly Location

It’s worth mentioning that this venue is designed to be accessible to wheelchairs, which is not always the case with city venues. Likewise, the parking ramp makes rolling a large suitcase of outfit changes much easier.

Connected to the Skyways System

The Skyways can be pretty bright and used for a few pictures. Of course, we would look for skyways that are not crowded. It’s not the best background, but in case of bad weather, it’s covered and has some good lightning.

So, Is the Mayo Civic Center a Good Spot for Indoor Pictures?

See for yourself with Melanie and Christopher’s photos.
I believe the Mayo Civic Center is a decent Free Spot for Indoor photos.

Now, onto the images! The day of their session was snowy. We captured a few shots outdoors but spent the first part of the session staying warm inside. We used the Mayo Civic Center’s second floor and skyway. Since it was around Christmas, we also took advantage of a huge Christmas tree. For poses, I asked them to walk and use the stairs. I also played with reflections on the windows. As you can see, the trade-off for a covered location is the warm-toned background.

What is worth noting is the adjacent Rochester Art Center, which has way better lighting and allows for a photography session, but it would cost you a photography permit.

Now, let’s see the exterior options with another couple.

What Are the Mayo Civic Center’s Outdoor Options?

On a sunny day, the Civic Center offers more than one asset for outdoor photos.

The Wavy Glass Façade

The mix of white structural elements and the wavy glass wall gives the building a minimalist and modern appearance. This architectural statement fits well with a large, modern city aesthetic. In fact, along with the new Mayo Clinic (Kellen Building), these are probably the two most architecturally bold buildings in the area. Pairing the glass façade with the grey cement floor and young planted trees creates a look often found in European countries like France or the Netherlands.

The River Shore and the Riverfront Plaza

The Zumbro River flows right in front of the building. A walkway with a red railing, shaped like an American flag, runs alongside it. This railing provides a striking contrast with the blue water. The river shore and Riverfront Plaza offer great spots for a few photos.

The Tapered Arch-Shaped Sculpture

At the intersection with 2nd St SE sits the Tapered Arch-Shaped Sculpture by artist Po Shu Wang. This modern piece, echoing Chicago’s “giant jelly bean,” provides a fun backdrop for a shot or two.

The Sunset and the City in the background

Oriented in an east-west direction, the plaza offered a direct view of the city’s 2nd St SE and the Rochester Library illuminated by the sunset. The result is a modern background with flair.

The Rochester Art Center (RAC)

The RAC, attached to the main building, offers a slightly different style of cladding for photos. The first part, called the Tower Block, is a massive four-story rectangle clad in dark brown copper steel. The slightly smaller Art Box Gallery (three stories) is covered in light gray zinc. It cantilevers over the walkway, creating a sheltered spot for pedestrians. Both sections connect via a glass-walled link, providing yet another modern backdrop.

Mayo Park

Mayo Park sits on the east side of the building. It features a giant red brick wall that casts afternoon shade over the grassy area. While the Zumbro River flows just beyond the park’s edge, you won’t see much of it in photos. The park itself is straightforward: flat, grassy, and dotted with tall oak trees. It’s ideal for a few shots but probably too basic for an entire session. It has a similar vibe to Soldier’s Field.

How to Prepare for Your Session

Pay Attention to Events

Be aware of the Civic Center’s calendar. Shows, concerts, meetings, or even church gatherings can fill the halls. If there is an event, it is best to avoid the area, as it will likely be packed.

You don’t want to accidentally crash a wrestling convention (though, admittedly, it could result in some memorable photos).

What Is the Best Time of Day?

Late afternoon is ideal. Keep in mind that the sun can slip behind the Fontaine Tower building earlier than you might expect, so plan accordingly. Check the sunlight calculator to estimate the best time of day.

What Is the Best Time of Year?

One advantage of city settings is that they work all year round, regardless of the weather. Of course, sunny days are always nicer, but you will avoid the sparse feeling of a deciduous forest in winter, for instance.

Should You Pair This Location with Another Spot?

Different backgrounds and outfits help keep photos interesting. Both of the couples I show in this article paired it with the nearby Quarry Hill Park. Consider pairing this modern spot with a more natural setting or a historic building, like the Plummer House. Couples getting married at the Mayowood Stone Barn might enjoy combining it with one of Rochester’s larger parks, such as Chester Woods, Willow Creek Reservoir, or Oxbow Park.

What are the immediate other downtown options?

The immediate nearby location would be the Plummer Building, 1st Ave SW, the 3rd St SW, with the brick building, the Peace Plaza, and the numerous parking ramp rooftops.

If you need recommendations for other good spots, check out my list of the 30 best places downtown.

Where to Park?

Just across from the Rochester Public Library, you’ll find the public parking ramp (SP+ Parking) and the Civic Center North Parking Lot.

Do you need a Permit?

Rochester city allows photography. We don’t need any permit.

FAQ: Mayo Civic Center Engagement Session

Location & Access

Q: Is the Mayo Civic Center always open for photography?
A: The building is generally accessible during business hours, but it’s essential to check their event calendar first. When events are scheduled, the space can be crowded and may not be suitable for photography sessions.

Q: Can we use the Rochester Art Center for photos?
A: While the Rochester Art Center is attached to the Mayo Civic Center and offers better lighting, you’ll need to obtain a photography permit to shoot inside the RAC, which involves additional cost and planning.

Q: Are there restroom facilities available during our session?
A: Yes, the Mayo Civic Center has public restrooms available, making it convenient for outfit changes and touch-ups during your session.

Technical & Planning

Q: What should we wear for photos at this location?
A: Since the interior has warm, orange-toned walls, avoid clothing in similar warm tones that might clash. Cooler colors like blues, grays, and whites tend to work better with the building’s interior lighting and modern aesthetic.

Q: How long can we shoot at this location?
A: Sessions can typically last 1-2 hours, depending on whether you’re using both indoor and outdoor areas. The variety of backdrops allows for multiple outfit changes and diverse shots.

Q: What if it’s crowded when we arrive?
A: If the building is busier than expected, we can focus on the outdoor areas around the building, the riverside walkway, and Mayo Park. The exterior options are often less crowded than the interior spaces.

Weather & Seasonal Considerations

Q: Is this a good location for winter engagement sessions?
A: Absolutely! The Mayo Civic Center is one of the few covered photography locations in Rochester, making it ideal for winter sessions. The indoor spaces keep you warm while still providing beautiful natural light through the large windows.

Q: What happens if the weather changes during our outdoor session?
A: The beauty of this location is its flexibility. We can easily move between indoor and outdoor spaces depending on weather conditions, ensuring we get great shots regardless of rain, snow, or changing conditions.

Q: Are there any seasonal decorations we should know about?
A: During the holiday season, the building often features large Christmas trees and decorations that can add festive elements to your photos. Check ahead if you’d like to incorporate seasonal elements.

Logistics & Preparation

Q: How early should we arrive before our session?
A: We recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early to scout the location, check for any events, and get comfortable with the space. This also allows time for any last-minute outfit adjustments.

Q: Can we bring props or personal items?
A: Yes, props are welcome! The modern, minimalist aesthetic of the building works well with clean, simple props. Just keep in mind that you’ll be walking between different areas, so choose items that are easy to transport.

Q: Is there a backup plan if this location doesn’t work out?
A: Yes, we always have backup options. Nearby alternatives include the Plummer Building, Peace Plaza, and various downtown locations. For natural settings, Quarry Hill Park is just a short drive away.

Photography Specifics

Q: Will the indoor lighting affect our photo quality?
A: The mixed artificial and natural lighting can be challenging, but we manage this by positioning you near the large glass walls where natural light dominates. The key is working with the available light rather than against it.

Q: Can we get both modern and natural-looking photos at this location?
A: Absolutely! The modern architecture provides contemporary, urban shots, while the riverside area and Mayo Park offer more natural, organic backgrounds. This diversity is one of the location’s biggest advantages.

Q: Are there any restrictions on poses or photography styles?
A: No specific restrictions, but the space works best for walking shots, stair poses, and utilizing the architectural elements. The large windows are perfect for silhouette shots and playing with reflections.

Conclusion: Should You Use the Mayo Civic Center and the area for Your Photos?

The Mayo Civic Center’s biggest advantages are its downtown-adjacent location, generous outdoor areas, and a covered option (one of the only ones in Rochester).
In case of rain or snow, I usually recommend postponing the session. However, if that’s not possible (due to a tight schedule or if it’s your wedding day), having a covered spot is better than no spot at all. Working with mixed natural and artificial light can be tricky. I recommend staying close to the large glass walls, where the outside light overpowers the indoor fixtures. The skyway is another spot with good, clean light.

On sunny days, the exterior’s modern architecture and riverside setting allow for stunning photos!
