Engagement Sessions at Willow Creek Reservoir Park in Rochester, MN: A Gem location to use for your next photo session
Today, we will talk about a lesser-known park in Rochester, one of the city’s many reservoirs. Unlike other reservoirs, such as Gamehaven Reservoir or Silver Creek Reservoir, Willow Creek Reservoir is a great location for engagement and family photo sessions.
Let’s take a closer look at what this park offers and why it might be the right choice for your next photo shoot.

Presentation of Willow Creek Reservoir Park
Willow Creek Reservoir is a large artificial lake built in southern Rochester, MN, as part of a flood prevention system. It features a dam and a 60-acre reservoir, surrounded by a mix of deciduous forests, scattered pines, prairies, and wetlands.
The dam is located on the north side, and just beyond it lies Willow Creek Golf Course and Country Club, which is also a wedding venue in Rochester.
The 2.2-mile loop trail around the reservoir offers diverse backdrops, including open water views, forested paths, and rolling hills.
Why Choose Willow Creek Reservoir Park for Your Engagement Photos?
There are several reasons to consider this location for your engagement session.
- Less crowded than other parks
This park is quieter than more well-known locations such as Quarry Hill, Chester Woods Park, or Oxbow Park. The peaceful atmosphere allows for more intimate and private moments, making it easier to relax in front of the camera. You probably don’t want to run into a coworker during your session. - Great in all seasons
The park works well year-round. In winter, the covered areas and prairies provide options for cold-weather sessions, and you can even walk on the frozen lake. In summer, the lush wetlands add greenery, and in fall, the trees display beautiful colors. The red Smooth Sumac, in particular, stands out with its deep red tones. - Varied terrain for creative angles
Unlike flat parks that can sometimes feel repetitive, Willow Creek Reservoir has gentle hills that allow for different perspectives in photos. The elevation changes create bird’s-eye views and overhead shots, which are often flattering for portraits. - Dog-friendly park
This park allows dogs off-leash, making it a great option for couples who want to include their pet in the session. - Minimal visual distractions
One issue with some lakeside locations is the presence of houses along the shore, which can take away from the natural feel of the images. At Willow Creek Reservoir, only a few houses are visible in the background, ensuring that the focus remains on the couple and the surrounding nature.

Best Spots in the Park for Engagement Photos
If we visit this reservoir, we will likely follow the loop trail and take advantage of most of the following locations.
The Reservoir Shoreline – Perfect for romantic waterfront shots with sky reflections on the water. This spot is so picturesque that I would even recommend it for a surprise wedding proposal in Rochester.

The Reservoir Deck – A great location for photos directly on the lake, adding a peaceful and scenic element to the session.

The Wooden Fence – Near the parking lot, this spot adds a charming, rustic touch to engagement photos.

Prairie Area – Ideal for soft, dreamy photos, especially when the grass is dry and golden.

The Tall Grass on the West Side – This area has exceptionally tall grass, creating a wild, almost jungle-like feel.

Woodland Trails – A perfect choice for couples who love a natural, rustic atmosphere with tree-lined paths.

Willow Creek and Its Rock Formations – Great for photos by the water, with rocks adding texture and depth to the background.

Best Time of Day for Photos
As with all photography, light is key. The best time for photos is early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the light is softer and more flattering.
One thing to note: the west side of the park is on a hill, meaning it will fall into shade earlier in the day.
Therefore, you might want to start 2 to 3 hours before sunset, depending on the season.

Tips for Couples Preparing for Their Session
- Wear neutral, earth-tone outfits or warm colors to complement the natural surroundings.
- Bring comfortable shoes, as we will be walking for about one to one and a half hours during the session.
- Just in case you were planning to come with a wheelchair: The trail is not suitable for wheelchairs.
- If you love adventurous shots, consider bringing fishing gear or even a canoe if it’s meaningful to you.
- In summer, don’t forget mosquito repellent to stay comfortable.
- I don’t recall any bathroom, so if you need to go to the toilets, the closest gas station is Kwik Trip on 48th St SE.

Where to Park?
There are two main access points to Willow Creek Reservoir Park.
- The main parking lot is located at 1343 Lone Pine Drive SW, Rochester, Minnesota. It can accommodate about 20 vehicles.
- The park can also be accessed through the Scenic Oaks neighborhood. If using this entrance, park along Reservoir Dr SW.
Should You Go There for Wedding Day Photos?
The answer, as always, is that it depends.
To access the best spots, you’ll need time to walk. Some areas, especially near the creek, can become muddy after heavy rain. However, the top of the dam remains dry and can be a great location for photos.
If you’re getting married near this area, it could be a great option. However, if your wedding is at a downtown venue such as a restaurant, Quarry Hill Nature Center, or a church in Mazeppa, it may not be practical to travel here on your wedding day.

Conclusion
Willow Creek Reservoir Park is a hidden gem in Rochester, MN, offering a peaceful and diverse natural setting for engagement photos.
Not only is it a beautiful location, but it is also quiet and private, making it an ideal choice for couples who prefer a more intimate atmosphere. Whether you are drawn to lakeside romance, open prairie views, or secluded woodland trails, this park offers a perfect mix of natural beauty and tranquility.
