Winter Engagement Session at Silver Lake, Rochester, MN

Silver Lake is the historic city lake on the northeast side of downtown Rochester and a favorite spot for photoshoots. While most sessions happen in summer or fall, today we’re showcasing Paul and Brianna’s winter engagement session on a cold January day.

Couple’s Story

Brianna and Paul first met on a church trip to Nepal with the Community of Christ, where Paul once lived. Their shared faith brought them together, and a few years later, they were engaged. Brianna works as a nurse at the Mayo Clinic, and Paul was studying computer science and software development.

I loved how Brianna’s face would suddenly light up with a big smile and how Paul stayed cheerful, no matter the temperature. I have to admire his bravery for enduring the cold in light attire!

We connected online and met in a coffee shop to plan their session. A few days later, we shot on the streets of downtown Rochester before heading to Silver Lake, where Brianna often jogs.

Walking on the Frozen Lake

Walking on a frozen lake is always a thrill. For Brianna, a Durand, Wisconsin, native, it was familiar but still a blast. For safety, we ensured at least 6 inches of ice thickness before venturing onto the lake.

Silver Lake, created in the 1930s on the Zumbro River, rarely freezes completely. We chose the east side, where the lack of current allowed a thicker ice layer.

Ideal Light on a Winter Day

On winter days, the sun stays low, providing soft light all day. However, afternoons tend to be warmer than mornings, so we scheduled our shoot for late afternoon to balance light and comfort.

Key Elements for Winter Photos

Winter Foliage and High Grass

As a local photographer, I’ve shot many sessions at Silver Lake and nearby parks, like Quarry Hill (Quarry Hill) and Oxbow Park (Oxbow Park). A touch of orange leaves or golden grasses contrasts beautifully with a vivid blue sky, emphasizing the season.

Snow Play

The snow was a highlight. Although we couldn’t do a full snowball fight, the pristine snow layer created a magical setting—despite our couple not wearing gloves for that part!

Stone Bridge

A quaint limestone bridge adds nostalgia and a rustic touch. The same limestone was used in Rochester landmarks like the Plummer House (Plummer House) and adjacent parks (Plummer House fall sessions).

Preparing for Your Silver Lake Session

Dress Warm

Layer up: wear thermal leggings or ski pants, wool socks, a warm coat, gloves, a hat, and a scarf. A colorful scarf can even become a stylish accent in your photos.

Coordinate Outfits

Avoid clashing colors and mismatched levels of formality. You don’t need identical outfits, but aim for complementary hues and similar styles.

Bring Props

  • Sunglasses or ski goggles
  • Warm blanket
  • Hot cocoa mug
  • Ice skates
  • Wooden sled
  • Ice fishing gear
  • Snowman props

Optional Funny idea: Feed the Geese

If you bring bread or corn, geese will gather around you, creating fun and candid moments—just watch out for goose droppings!
