Plummer House: A Historic Venue Near Downtown
Plummer House stands as a testament to Rochester’s rich history. Once the private residence of Dr. Henry Stanley Plummer—an innovator who helped modernize the Mayo Clinic—it’s now managed by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department and operates as a wedding venue you can tour. Built in 1924, its Tudor Revival architecture features exposed timber beams, limestone accents, and a slate roof—details that create stunning photographic backdrops.
Prime Photoshoot Locations

Front Façade
The Tudor Revival front façade boasts a grand entrance with ornate timber framing. Its symmetry and historical detailing make for striking portraits.

Limestone Arches & Sun Room, & Terrace
At the rear, a walkway framed by limestone arches leads to a charming Sun Room. This intimate space is ideal for candid shots.

Lawns & Fountains
The property features multiple lawns: the front lawn with a historic water tower and the lower lawn with two grand fountains. Note: the fountains operate only in warmer months.

Staircases
Scattered staircases—brick, limestone, and metal—add varied textures and angles. Metal stairs along the house side provide a modern contrast for creative compositions.
Is Plummer House the Best Fall Location in Rochester?
If fiery reds are your goal, you may prefer other venues. But for warm golds and soft browns, Plummer House delivers excellence. It’s a chic and elegant atmosphere, paired with its stones, evergreen and deciduous trees, which actually work all the time.
Plus, its orientation (east-west) is perfect for the light.
But there is one thing that is not ideal for a fall photo shoot, it’s the amount of sky we can use…
Let me explain:

The only limitation of Plummer House during the fall session is that there is not much of the sky…
If, like me, you enjoy vivid fall colors, the Plummer House might not be the best location in town. To truly appreciate the vibrant yellows and oranges of autumn, it’s important to have a contrasting color, which is typically a blue sky. However, the issue with the Plummer House is its density and the tall trees that are so close to the main spots. Unless you’re taking a wide-angle photo, you won’t capture much sky that contrasts with the fall colors.
That said, there are no other chic and historic venues similar to use nearby… That being said, the Plummer House neighborhoods (the Pill Hill and Historic Southwest) are full of amazing homes (not the same Mansion), with nicely colored trees in their front yard, and the street provides more views of the blue sky.
So, for the little part of blue sky to integrate into your pictures, you could easily just use the nearby streets.
That’s why, if you have the time and budget, I would suggest pairing the Plummer House with an adjacent location. Here is a short list of options.

Style & Preparation Tips
Plummer House exudes relaxed elegance, like an aristocratic country home—dress accordingly by choosing complementary colors and textures that suit the season and setting.
For a fall session, you would like earth tones colors: orange, burgundy, beige, white, grey.
Also, consider warm material such as wool or leather.
