A Heartwarming Family Photoshoot at Willow Creek Reservoir Park, Rochester, MN

There’s something magical about a family portrait session that captures warmth, love, and joy across multiple generations. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful family by the serene Willow Creek Reservoir, just south of Rochester, MN.

Both parents work as doctors at the Mayo Clinic, and each year since their first child turned one, they’ve called me for a session. This year, they brought along their second child, and even the grandparents joined in the fun!

With golden light filtering through the trees and lush greenery as our backdrop, this session was a perfect blend of candid moments and timeless family portraits.

Include the Grandparents: A Celebration of Generations

One of the most special parts of this shoot was framing three generations together. The grandparents, with the mother dressed in traditional attire, stood proudly beside their son, daughter-in-law, and two energetic grandsons. These images celebrate family heritage and remind us to cherish every stage of life.

The grandparents’ warm, wise presence beautifully complemented the playful energy of their grandkids.

Capturing Love and Laughter

Every family has its own dynamic. Although affectionate poses can feel unfamiliar in some cultures, I helped everyone relax, and the session was filled with joy and laughter.

Whether it was a young boy’s infectious grin as he ran through the grass, a baby’s giggles while being lifted into the air, or sweet moments between the parents, these photos reflect love in its purest form.

Letting the Kids Lead the Way

Toddlers love being the center of attention, and it’s often better to let them have fun, do silly things, and then reward them with the attention they crave.

One of my favorite images is the little boy peeking mischievously from behind his parents. Another touching moment was Dad carrying his son on his shoulders—a classic pose that perfectly captured their bond.

The Beauty of Outdoor Sessions at Willow Creek Reservoir

The sun brings incredible energy to family sessions. We actually had to reschedule several times because of clouds and storms (thank you, Minnesota), but we finally got our perfect day!

Soft, natural light created a dreamy atmosphere, making every smile and expression shine.

Nature enhances family portraits, and this lakeside setting was no exception.

Rolling hills, tall grass, and the lake in the background added texture and depth, creating a picturesque backdrop for this memorable session.

Willow Creek Reservoir Park: A Top Spot for Sessions

Willow Creek Reservoir Park offers scenic space for the Rochester community. And it’s one of my favorite places to shoot engagement sessions.

You might know it because it’s adjacent to Willow Creek Golf Course, one of the affordable wedding venues in the Med City.

The park features hiking trails that circle the lake, with landscapes that range from rolling hills to flat terrain, high grass to dense forest. Willow Creek itself adds a charming touch to the natural beauty.

I first discovered this park years ago at a wedding at the DoubleTree Hotel. The clients were getting ready in the hotel suite and wanted a water setting. Silver Lake was too busy, so they chose this peaceful spot instead.

The park is especially stunning in fall when changing leaves create a vibrant display, and it rarely feels crowded, perfect for reserved families. It’s also dog-friendly, so your four-legged friends are welcome too.

Family portraits are more than just photos; they’re visual stories that preserve the love and connections defining us. That’s especially true for this family, with grandparents living far away and not seeing their grandkids often.
