Family Portrait and Engagement Session at Quarry Hill Park, Rochester, MN

When I work with families, I love including the kids and turning the shoot into a true family session. Children are a big part of our lives, and on the wedding day, you want them to feel comfortable and have fun in front of the camera.

That’s exactly what Halley and Kelly did, bringing along their “favorite” little one for some memorable photos.

Here’s what a typical family session looks like as we explore Quarry Hill Park.

The Harry L. Buck Children’s Pond

The Nature Center building, with its rustic wooden façade, offers a great dark backdrop (as seen on this couple’s wedding day). But for Halley and Kelly, I chose the adjacent Harry L. Buck Children’s Pond (an artificial pond with a central island), lush with flowers and a willow tree, connected by a charming footbridge.

The Meadow Area

Next, we moved to the meadow, recently cleared to reveal an open valley of tall grasses and wildflowers. This spot is especially magical when the sumac trees burst into deep red hues.

The Edge of the Forest

One of the places I like is the edge of the forest. The forest being darker allows me to create a more subdued background. As a result, you will stand out from the natural environment.

The Oak Savanna

Climbing to the top of the hill, we arrived at the Oak Savanna and old quarry area—my favorite part of the park. The light-colored limestone ground creates natural steps, perfect for photos with families of different heights, including toddlers. Surrounding evergreens and distant walnut and birch trees (which glow golden in fall) complete the scene.

Halley even had fun re-proposing to Kelly.

The Quarry

The Quarry is one of my favorite parts. The brightness of the limestone brings a lot of luminosity to the images, and we can use the step to sit.

What’s more, the open space created by the empty area of the former quarry puts the background at a distance, which usually creates a photogenic effect.

A Unique City View

Finally, we followed a secret passage up to a hidden vantage point overlooking Rochester. If you’d like an urban twist, nearby Downtown Rochester also provides a stylish backdrop.

By the end of the shoot, I couldn’t resist getting the whole crew—even the parents—to make silly faces for one last playful frame.

I can’t wait to photograph this wonderful family again, next time at The Mayowood Stone Barn with all their kids and loved ones.

Why Quarry Hill Park Works for Families Photo Sessions

After the Plummer House, Quarry Hill Park is Rochester’s second most popular photo destination—ideal for maternity, senior portraits, or family sessions. It packs diverse backgrounds into a compact area.

You’ll find towering pines, sports fields, playgrounds, and even the wild Silver Creek. Plus, after family portraits, you can visit the Nature Center to see the animals!

How to Prepare for Your Photo Session

Setting yourselves up for a relaxed, fun session ensures smoother shoots and better photos. Here’s how to get ready:

  • Plan your outfits: Coordinate colors and styles without matching exactly; choose layers or textures to add depth and adapt to changing weather.
  • Think about timing: Schedule around nap schedules and meal times for little ones; aim for two hours before sunset for soft, flattering light.
  • Pack essentials: Bring water, healthy snacks, and a small toy or comfort item to keep kids engaged; include a compact emergency kit (wipes, band-aids).
  • Location scouting: Review the park map in advance and share your photographer’s approach with family members; plan a restroom break at the Nature Center before we start.
  • Hair and makeup touch-ups: Bring a comb or brush, lipstick or tinted balm, and blotting papers to refresh your look between shots.
  • Communicate special requests: Let me know if there’s a favorite spot, prop or pose you’d like to include; I’ll weave your ideas into the session flow. I live on the top of the park, I know it like my backyard 😀
  • Stay present and flexible: Embrace playful moments and candid interruptions; genuine smiles and laughter make the best images.
