Locations in Rochester: Where to Go for Your Maternity Photos

When doing a maternity photo session, you have a couple of options to choose from:

  • You can come to our studio and have pictures taken in a warm studio with a simple background. This emphasizes the bump of your belly.
  • You can decide to do that in your home (depending on your home’s luminosity, decoration, etc.).
  • You can go outside in one of the several parks in Rochester, MN. You can check the list of photo locations here. I would suggest going to a park (for instance, Quarry Hill, which is a must for family sessions and also weddings).
  • If you feel like an urban vibe, you can go downtown as well (check our recommended places)

Studio Maternity vs. Outdoor Maternity Sessions

Studio Maternity Sessions

Studio sessions offer a clean, controlled environment with flattering lighting and a focus entirely on you and your bump. They’re perfect for dramatic silhouettes, skin-toned setups, or more intimate portraits. You don’t have to worry about the weather, and outfit changes are easy.

Outdoor Maternity Sessions

Outdoor sessions bring a natural, relaxed feel. Whether it’s a field, park, or urban setting, the scenery adds mood and variety to your photos. Golden hour light creates a soft glow, and the changing seasons can offer beautiful backdrops—greenery in summer, warm tones in fall, or snowy magic in winter.

Indoor Home Maternity Sessions

Indoor maternity sessions at your home offer unparalleled intimacy and comfort. All we need is a nice, comfortable space with good natural light – typically, your bedroom or living room near a large window works perfectly. The familiar, warm environment creates a relaxed atmosphere ideal for genuine, tender moments while working wonderfully year-round regardless of weather conditions.

Which One to Choose?

It depends on your style and comfort. If you want timeless and artistic, go for the studio. If you prefer candid, nature-inspired photos, choose the outdoors—or combine both for the best of both worlds.

When Should You Have Your Maternity Photos Taken?

That’s the question that is frequently asked.

We recommend that you plan your maternity session a few weeks before the delivery date.

The idea is to have as big a belly bump as possible. Some women will have a prominent bump at 7 months, while others prefer to wait until the 8th month of their pregnancy.

Common Questions to Help You Plan for Your Maternity Session:

Can You Take Pictures with Your Beloved One

Of course! Maternity photos are not reserved only for the future mother! Both parents are more than welcome for the session. Of course, you can have some individual pictures as well as some pictures with your plus one.

You Already Have Kids; Can You Include Them in Your Photos?

That’s doable under some conditions.
For instance, if you have toddlers, we can include them in the photos, but we won’t turn it into a toddler photo session, which is different. What’s more, you would need someone to take care of them while you have your individual pictures taken.

If you have older kids, such as kids in middle school or high school, they are welcome to join you for a few family photos. Of course, we won’t turn that into a High School senior picture session.

Can You Bring Your Dog?

We love dogs and would be happy to include them during outdoor photos. Of course, you would need someone to take care of them once we are done with the pictures.

How Should You Dress for Your Session? Do We Provide Outfits?

We recommend that you wear a long maternity dress that emphasizes the belly. They usually have an opening on the front, and are made from soft and light fabrics, allowing for more ‘dramatic’ images. You can easily find some on the internet. We do not provide dresses.

Simple outfits can work as well. Some people achieve great pictures with simple outfits; for instance, blue jeans and a white shirt.

If you come with your plus one, you can bring complementary or matching outfits.

Can we do Winter Outdoor Maternity Sessions in Minnesota?

Yes, we absolutely can shoot outdoor maternity sessions during Minnesota winters! While the cold weather requires extra planning and preparation, winter maternity photos can be absolutely stunning with snow-covered landscapes creating magical, ethereal backdrops.
We recommend keeping outdoor winter sessions shorter (30-45 minutes) and suggest layering with warm coats, blankets, and accessories that can be easily removed for key shots. The key is timing – we’ll work quickly during the coldest moments and use covered areas or warming breaks as needed. Many expecting mothers find that pregnancy actually helps them stay warmer during these sessions! We’ll also have backup studio options available in case of extreme weather conditions. The dramatic contrast of winter scenery with the warmth of pregnancy creates truly unique and breathtaking images that many couples treasure as some of their most memorable photos.

The Nudity Question

Do you have to show any skin? No. There is no obligation.
Can we shoot pictures of you half or fully naked? Yes, as long as you are comfortable with that, we are totally fine with that.

If having your plus one or a friend with you makes you more comfortable, then come with him/her.

If you want to do naked pictures, the tip is to avoid marks that will show on your skin. Therefore, avoid wearing tight underwear just before the session.

What Props Can You Bring?

Accessories are always great to keep your hands busy. Therefore, you can bring:

  • a stylized hat
  • a flower
  • a photo of the ultrasound
  • small baby shoes
  • a baby book
  • a sign with your baby’s name
  • a pijama

Do You Want Funny Maternity Photos?

There are a lot of ideas on the internet for funny images.
Let’s think about gender reveal photos, which usually work with smoke bombs or chalk powder.

Let’s think about staging a funny situation, or drawing something on the mom’s belly.

Do We Shoot Newborn Pictures?

Yes! We also offer newborn photo sessions. Those are really focused on your baby.
Some parents wait to combine images from the two sessions to create their birth announcement cards.

Frequently Asked Questions About Your Maternity Session

Here is a comprehensive guide to help you plan and prepare for your maternity photoshoot experience with us in Rochester, MN.

Q: How far in advance should I book my session?
A: To ensure you get your preferred date, especially for weekend or “golden hour” sessions, we recommend booking at least 4-6 weeks in advance. This also gives us ample time to consult with you on your vision for the shoot.

Q: What happens if I go into labor before my scheduled session?
A: We understand that babies have their own timeline! We offer flexible rescheduling up to 2 weeks before your due date at no extra charge. If you need to reschedule within that window, we’ll work with you to find an alternative solution.

Q: What if I need to reschedule due to health reasons or bad weather?
A: We completely understand that things can change. If you are not feeling well, or if the Minnesota weather isn’t cooperating for an outdoor shoot, we are happy to reschedule at no extra cost. Your comfort and safety are our top priorities.

Q: Do you offer bundled packages for maternity and newborn sessions?
A: Yes, we do! Many clients love to capture both milestones with a consistent style. We offer discounted “Belly to Baby” packages when you book both maternity and newborn sessions with us.

Q: Do you require a deposit to book?
A: Yes, a deposit is required to secure your date in our calendar. The remaining balance is typically due on the day of the session. We can discuss flexible payment options if needed.

Q: I have a special location in mind that’s outside of Rochester. Do you travel for sessions?
A: We love discovering new and meaningful locations! Our packages include travel within the immediate Rochester, MN area. We are absolutely available to travel to a special location further away, and a travel fee may apply depending on the distance. We can provide a custom quote during our consultation.

Q: How long does a maternity session typically last?
A: A session usually lasts between 60 to 90 minutes. This allows for a relaxed pace, outfit changes, and a variety of poses without making you feel rushed or tired.

Q: Do you offer hair and makeup services?
A: While we don’t provide these services directly, we can recommend trusted local hair and makeup artists who specialize in maternity photography preparation.

Q: Can you install a studio in our home?
A: Yes, if your living room has flat and high ceilings, we can set up a portable studio in your space. We would need an area of approximately 15 feet x 30 feet with adequate ceiling height. The studio setup takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Q: What does your studio look like?
A: We offer a home studio located in our basement, accessible by stairs. The space includes a dedicated changing room for your privacy and comfort. Alternatively, you can change directly in the studio area while the photographer steps out to give you complete privacy to get ready

Q: How many photos will I receive, and how are they delivered?
A: I will select, retouch, and deliver to you all the photos I judge good. I will deliver your photos via a private online gallery within 2-3 weeks of your session.

Q: What format are the digital files?
A: All images are delivered as high-resolution JPEG files, perfect for printing and sharing. Files are optimized for both web use and professional printing.

Q: What does “retouching” include? Can you edit out stretch marks?
A: Our standard retouching includes color correction and light skin smoothing for a polished yet natural look.
We can absolutely soften or remove stretch marks and other temporary skin imperfections at your request with an additional fee.

Q: Will you help me with posing if I feel awkward in front of the camera?
A: Of course. Most people are not professional models, and our job is to make you feel comfortable. We will provide gentle guidance and direct you into natural, flattering poses that beautifully showcase your pregnancy.

Q: Can I see the unedited or RAW photos from my session?
A: We do not provide unedited or RAW files. Culling and editing are integral parts of our artistic process. We carefully select the most compelling images from your session and enhance them to our professional standard to tell your story beautifully.

Special Circumstances

Q: I’m expecting twins/multiples. Does this change anything?
A: Congratulations! Sessions with multiples may require a bit more time and specialized posing, but we’re experienced in showcasing multiple babies beautifully. Let us know when booking so we can plan accordingly.

Q: I’m having a high-risk pregnancy. Can we still do a session?
A: Your safety is our priority. We can accommodate most situations with proper planning, such as shorter sessions, more breaks, or studio-only options. Please discuss your specific needs when booking.

Q: What if I’m feeling self-conscious about my body?
A: This is completely normal! We specialize in making expecting mothers feel beautiful and confident. We’ll work with lighting, angles, and poses that highlight your best features and the beauty of your pregnancy.

Q: Can we incorporate cultural or religious elements into our session?
A: Absolutely! We love celebrating diverse traditions and incorporating meaningful cultural elements, clothing, or customs into your maternity photos.
