The Splash After the Smash: A Parent’s Guide to the Toddler Bucket Bath Session
You’ve survived the cakes smashing session. The frosting is everywhere, your toddler is officially at peak chaos, and you’re wondering what comes next. At French Touch Photography, that’s exactly when things get really good. The Bucket Bath session is the playful, warm, and utterly candid finale to your Cake Smash experience, and it often produces the most heart-melting images of the entire day.

Why the Bucket Bath Works So Well
The transition from Cake Smash to Bucket Bath is more than just practical cleanup. It is psychological. Toddlers can feel overwhelmed by the sticky texture of frosting on their skin and hands. Stepping into a warm, bubble-filled basin is an immediate sensory reset. It is a familiar, playful environment where they can finally relax, splash, and just be themselves. That shift from overstimulated to genuinely happy is written all over their faces, and it is exactly what my camera is waiting for.
All the bids might not love the bucket bath
That said, not every toddler would enjoy it. At first they can even been afraid, especially if it’s a new setting they are not used to.
My recommendations: give them a bucket bath a few day before, at the same place, so they already used to it.
And if your kiddos don’t like water, they are lot of other option for toddler sessions in Rochester.
Where Does the Session Take Place?

The Bucket Bath session works beautifully inside your home. The best spot is any room with generous natural light, think a large window in a living room, a bright bathroom, or an open kitchen area. Natural light keeps the images soft and warm without needing artificial lighting near water.
In summer, we can also take the bucket outside, onto a deck, a patio, or a grassy backyard. An outdoor setup adds a whole new energy to the images, with open sky, greenery, and room to splash without worrying about wet floors.
And of course, we can also set it up in our Rochester photo Studio.
Customizing the Look

One of the things I love about the Bucket Bath session is how flexible it is. We can keep it simple with just warm water and bubbles, or we can build something a little more styled. Here are the options we can explore together.
Bubbles
Classic, joyful, and always a hit with toddlers. A good bubble bath creates beautiful visual texture in the images and keeps little ones entertained while I shoot. If you want to go all in, a small bubble machine placed just out of frame can fill the air with floating bubbles, adding a genuinely magical quality to the photos. Bubble machines are inexpensive and easy to find online.
Milk Bath
Adding whole milk or a milk-and-water mixture to the bucket creates a soft, creamy, dreamlike look. The milky water diffuses light beautifully and gives the images an almost ethereal quality. It is completely safe and gentle on toddler skin.
Props and Florals
Fresh flowers floating in the water, lemon slices, or small seasonal fruits can add color and visual interest. We can match the styling to your Cake Smash theme or simply what feels beautiful to you. A favorite rubber duck or waterproof toy your toddler already loves is always welcome and helps them feel right at home.
Getting the Conditions Right
A comfortable toddler makes for great photos. A few things I pay close attention to:
- Water temperature. The water should be warm and comfortable, never cool. A lukewarm temperature keeps your child relaxed and happy to stay in the tub.
- Room temperature. If we are shooting indoors, make sure the room is warm before we start. A chilly room means a shivering toddler the moment they step out of the water. In summer, outdoor sessions solve this naturally.
- Bubble products. We use only hypoallergenic, tear-free, and fragrance-free bubble bath to protect sensitive toddler skin and eyes. If your child has known skin sensitivities, just let me know in advance.
Safety During the Session

You stay within arm’s reach of your child throughout the entire session, no exceptions. The basin is stable and weighted. I never ask you to step back for the sake of a cleaner frame. Your presence is part of the safety plan, and many of the best images actually include a parent’s hands hovering nearby or a reaction shot from just outside the frame.
What to Bring
This session is a DIY setup, so a little preparation goes a long way. Here is everything you need to have ready:
- A bucket or basin. A galvanized metal tub works perfectly and looks beautiful in photos. You can find them easily at Hobby Lobby, usually in the home decor or seasonal section, for a very reasonable price.
- Bubbles, milk, or any props you want to include, such as fresh flowers or fruit slices.
- A large hooded towel to wrap your toddler immediately after we finish.
- A fresh diaper and a change of clothes for the ride home.
- Any waterproof toy your toddler already loves, if they have one. For instance, rubber duck.
What I Focus On

While you keep your child happy and secure, I am watching for the details that make these images special:
- Tiny toes peeking over the rim of the basin
- Water droplets frozen mid-splash
- That particular brightness in a toddler’s eyes right after the mess of the cake is washed away
That clean, clear-eyed expression is something you only get in those first moments of the bath, and it is one of the reasons this session pairs so perfectly with the Cake Smash.
