What Makes Crawford Hall Special

Crawford Hall’s history as a roller rink gives it unique architectural details. The tall ceiling structure and patterned glass block windows provide soft, diffused light throughout the day.
Crawford Hall Main Reception Room

The main reception space measures about 7,688 square feet, allowing seating for up to 340 guests with room for a dance floor and buffet lines. It makes it one of the bigger venues in town, alongside the most sophisticated venue, The Castle, with its 400 guests, and way below the Rochester Civic Center, with its 720 guests.

The building’s industrial finish is part of its charm. Red brick and exposed surfaces give a raw, textured backdrop that works well for modern, rustic, or minimal décor.
At each side of the building, you will find two large parking doors that can be opened to let the breeze come in, or simply hold an outside cocktail hour.
Because of its open layout, couples can arrange the space to match their vision, whether that means banquet-style seating, a lounge area, or separate zones for ceremony and reception.
The patio for cocktail hour

At the south door of the Crawford building, stand the new (2022) patio area, featuring picnic tables covered by a pergola, plants, decorative grass, and mulch. That’s an ideal place for an outdoor cocktail hour, weather permitting.
Conveniently Located in Graham Park
Located in the Graham Park area, it’s near the Rochester Downtown and its many hotels. At least you don’t need a 1-hour drive from downtown!
Plus, it has two little sister venues just adjacent to the buildings, which are also managed by the Olmsted County: the Floral Hall (in limestone), and the Cheapest Aune Hall.
A very, very, very affordable Pricing!

Crawford Hall is one of the more affordable large-capacity wedding venues in Rochester, thanks to being managed by Olmsted County. Rental fees are well below those of many similar-sized venues, and tables and chairs are typically included, helping you stretch your budget toward décor, catering, or photography.
Friday: $450
Saturday: $450
Sunday: $450
For comparison, the historic Plummer House, managed by Rochester City Parks, offers a different style but is also an example of a public venue with accessible rates. Check the Plummer House guide.
Historic Building: A Former Roller Rink
Crawford Hall was designed by Rochester architect Harold H. Crawford and built in the 1950s as a community roller rink. Its tall ceilings, open layout, glass block windows, and sturdy structure are all remnants of that era. Olmsted County later acquired the building and converted it into an event venue, with a major remodel, adding the landscaped courtyard between Crawford Hall and Floral Hall(completed in fall 2022). Today, these historic features give weddings a distinctive backdrop rooted in local history.
Fun Historic Fac
Story shared by the venue manager. In 2018, Graham Park was doomed to destruction. One day before the beginning of the destruction, the Olmsted County formally approved a new Graham Park Master Plan thanks to John Kruesel (owner of the Antic Store), who managed to convince them. The plan aimed to modernize the fairgrounds and make it a year-round destination, not to demolish the park.
Strengths, Limitations and Solutions

Strengths
- Large capacity: Seats up to 340 guests comfortably.
- Ample space: About 7,688 sq ft main room, adaptable for ceremony, dinner, and dancing.
- Year-round availability: Heated and fully enclosed, which is rare for many Minnesota venues.
- Practical features: Wi-Fi, updated restrooms, and dimmable lighting for setting the right mood.
- Bright interior: Concrete floor reflects light, helping the room feel more open.
- Prices. They are ridiculously affordable.
Limitations and Fixes
- No dedicated prep room: Book a nearby hotel suite or Airbnb for hair, makeup, and getting dressed.
- No kitchen area: book a caterer that has its own truck.
- No proper cocktail hour room in case of bad weather: When setting up the table, leave some indoor space for the cocktail hour. The room is big enough! And if you want to have the wow surprise of revealing the dinner area, you can keep it separated with a curtain.
- Summer heat: During heat waves, the hall can get very warm. That’s a potential dramatic downside. Planning on renting portable air-conditioning units is a better solution than relying on fans.
Ideal Photography Settings

You got it, for all the photos of the bride’s preparation and the groom’s preparation, you would need a nice place outside the venue. If that’s part does not matter for you, then I guess you can just change quickly in the small room.
Best lighting: Late afternoon is when Crawford Hall shines. Sunlight filtering through the glass block windows and the new clear windows creates soft, patterned light that works beautifully for portraits during cocktail hours.
Top photo spots inside
- Near the glass block windows: for dramatic shadow play (silhouette picture), as an artistic inspiration.
- Under the high ceilings with string light hanging: for wide, atmospheric shots of the event.
Top photo spots outside
- North door area: Naturally shaded in the afternoon, perfect for large wedding party group photos without harsh light.
- Newly renovated courtyard between Crawford Hall and Floral Hall: Features a pergola, tall ornamental grasses, and fresh landscaping. This space offers a clean, modern backdrop with both greenery and architectural elements.
